ABOUT HIGH RIVER
The Town of High River is a Cool Little Town. An easy 30 minute drive south of Calgary on Highway 2 it’s a perfect day tripping destination. The community is the official home of the popular television show Heartland which is now in its 6th season of filming at locations throughout the community. In addition to being Home of Heartland, High River is a popular location for the film and television industry and has been featured in several other productions that are highlighted on the new ‘Famous People Famous Places’ Map of High River.

High River is birthplace of the Right Honourable Joe Clark, 16th Prime Minister of Canada and Scott Tannas, Canadian Senator.
High River is home of: – the original ‘Mantracker’ Terry Grant, – up and coming singer-songwriter-musician Calum Graham, (2011 Winner of the Song for Canada Contest, 2012 Winner of the Canadian Guitar Competition, 2009 Winner Canadian Youth Talent Competition and 2009 Winner of the Calgary Stampede Talent Search), and
High River is the final resting place of: – Calgary Stampede founder Guy Weadick and his wife Grace Bensell (aka Forence LaDue), – George Lane, one of the Calgary Stampedes Big Four, original financiers – Famous Canadian author W.O. Mitchell, who wrote Who Has Seen the Wind and Jake & The Kid.
FAMOUS PLACES
Heartland’s iconic ‘Maggie’s Diner’ film set is located on 3rd Avenue in Downtown High River. Although the facility is closed to the public, visitors can look through the windows and into the fictitious world of the popular TV show. – High River’s Museum of the Highwood on Centre Street in Downtown High River has appeared in numerous film and television productions, including Superman III (1978), starring Christopher Reeve and Richard Pryor. – The Historic Wales Movie Theatre, on Centre Street in Downtown High River was Clint Eastwood’s centre of production from 1991-92, when he was filming Unforgiven across southern Alberta. At the end of each filming day, he would retreat to the Wales Theatre to watch the dailies. – Famous Canadian Author W.O. Mitchell, often sought inspiration for his writing while sitting on the banks of the Highwood River, running through High River.

MUSEUM OF THE HIGHWOOD and the WHISTLESTOP CAFE The museum, newly re-opened in 2012, is open year-round, and housed in a beautifully restored historic CP Railway station, museum staff will take you down an exciting journey through High River’s history with all new exhibits and a hands-on Discovery Room. The Whistlestop Cafe is located in an authentic dining car right beside the Museum of the Highwood, open for breakfast and lunch daily, closed on Mondays.
SHEPPARD FAMILY PARK Sheppard Family Park is a historical park that celebrates High River’s history from the 1880s to the 1920s. Located at the corner of 12th Avenue and 5th St. SE, enjoy the picnic area and playground. Open daily from May 1 to October 31.
WALES MOVIE THEATRE Built in 1927, the theatre was built to accommodate both live theatre and movies. Through the years, the Wales Theatre has seen it all, from the primitive ‘storeroom theatres’ and early films, through the silent movies and to the talkies and technicolor, cinemascope to widescreens and now digital with a dolby surround sound system. Today the Wales Theatre retains many of its original design charms and features one of the last free-standing balconies in Canada.
HIGHWOOD GOLF AND COUNTRY CLUB A semi-private 27 hole golf course that is a favourite for golfers from across southern Alberta. Established in 1958, the course has gone through several upgrades over the years and in 2009 was proud to host the Alberta Senior Mens Amateur Championship. The $4.5 Million club house officially opened in 2010. Amenities include practice facilities, driving range, putting green, fully stocked Pro Shop and complete food & beverage services.
BIRDING AT FRANK LAKE CONSERVATION AREA Frank Lake is listed by Duck’s Unlimited as one of 597 Important Bird Areas in Canada, and is one of the best birding venues in the Calgary area. The lake is a shallow slough, typical of the prairie grasslands in Southern Alberta. It is a productive wetland that encompasses three basins totaling nearly 3,100 acres of flooded area with an additional 1,700 acres of managed upland habitat. The uplands are both native and seeded grasslands that benefit wildlife and waterfowl nesting. To date, 190 plant species, 194 bird species and over 16 mammal species have been recorded at the lake, including many that are regionally or provincially rare in status.
GEORGE LANE PARK & CAMPGROUND George Lane Park is nestled among hundreds of mature trees beside the Highwood River, within a short walking distance from Downtown High River’s entertainment, shopping and restaurants. The park is equipped with many amenities including a stage for plays and small concerts, a gazebo bandstand, a playground, baseball diamond, bocce ball and horse shoe pits, picnic tables, public washrooms and a fully serviced overnight campground. Considered the Jewel of High River, George Lane Park is a favourite destination for visitors and residents alike. HIGH
RIVER PARK SYSTEM High River features numerous parks and green spaces including a children’s splash park, a skateboard park, an off-leash dog park, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a culture centre and lots of playgrounds and picnic areas, along with 23 km of paved pathways winding along the Highwood River and through High River’s many parks
BOB SNODGRASS RECREATION COMPLEX located on 12th Avenue SE, consists of a 25 metre indoor swimming pool, 2 ice rinks, and the Highwood Curling Club.
